The subtleties of the ways in which certain parts of the body connected to others is an overwhelmingly complex aspects of medical science. The study of pressure points, and the ways nerves can interact with vital organs is a discipline that is very much alive and well, despite its founding in what some have deemed to be alternative medical techniques. It is the study of these connections that form the basis for reflexology.
In this case, the aspect of nervous times the reflexology focuses on specifically is the way in which the nerves in our extremities, namely the hands and feet, contain the root of nerves that run all the way down the length of the arms and legs to connect to various internal organs. By applying steady and strategically placed pressure to certain points on the undersides of the feet, or the palms of the hands, a response can be provoked from the organ that is affected by that specific nerve.
It starts by diagnosing exactly which internal organs are experiencing problems, and once the health issue has been isolated, the pressure treatment can begin. Practitioners of reflexology usually abide by a very detailed chart, similar to the type used in Chinese acupuncture. The chart maps the pressure points of the hands and feet to a very high degree of accuracy, and tells the practitioner exactly where they have to apply pressure in order to produce the desired affect.
It is crucial to the success of the treatment that the therapy be administered and relaxing setting that puts the patient in the most peaceful possible mindset. If the patient is tense, their muscles will inadvertently reflect that tension, and none of the treatment will be nearly as effective. This goes for many types of alternative medicine that deal with nervous tissue and the connected muscles, since these are the tissues that are most susceptible to subconscious reactions due to stress.
Similarly, it is important that if you were going to experiment with reflexology as a way of relieving pain for treating diseases, it must be performed by someone with professional experience in the field. Different pressure points on the hands and feet will require variable amounts of pressure to be applied in order to get the desired effect. It’s important that the right amount of pressure to be used, and under no circumstances should the treatments become painful at any point during the course of therapy. If it does, then it’s a good indication that you’re dealing with an amateur.
What you can expect from the short and long term effects of reflexology treatments depends on what the goal of therapy happens to be. Different treatments are going to have an effect on different internal organs of the body, and you might not feel any sort of tangible effects after just one treatment. It may take a while for results to show up on any sort of medical tests, although this length of time can be shortened if reflexology therapy is used in conjunction with other types of targeted treatments.

I am looking for a Reiki level 2 course in Nottingham. Can anyone help?
What happened to the person who taught you level 1? Usually students return to the same masters. If that master has moved away, he/she should be able to hook you up with someone else.
As a Reiki Master, I wouldn’t (don’t) start anyone at level 2. I would retrain and re-attune you to my system in level 1 first, because the levels build on each other, and every teacher is a little different. So even if you found a class, you’d have to take that into account. A lot of teachers (like me) also don’t advertise higher level classes except to their existing group of students.
To find a new Reiki Master, if you old master can’t help, you can go to or call new age and pagan shops, health food stores, astrology clubs, lightworker groups, new age or astrology fairs, holistic healing expos…the list is endless. There’s probably a magazine or two that serves your area of the UK that covers metaphysical and healing topics (and the magazine probably has a web site) and there will be lots of ads for Reiki Masters and classes there as well.
You also may be able to find someone who does distant teaching. For level 2, with all the symbols, that can be more challenging than learning in person, but it can be done.
