preferably a book that is easily available in india…otherwise name anything, i can order it on the net too.

“The complete idiots guide to hypnosis” and “Hypnotherapy for dummies” are great books. They cover the basics and are good and easy reads. This website http://hypnomind.blogspot.com has a lot of hypnosis books listed but I would definitely recommend the first two I stated above and they are pretty common books, so you should be able to order or find them in india easy.

Smoking is a physical craving for nicotine – and to stop smoking means you need to deal with the problem as a psychological issue. Any hypnosis sessions to quit smoking involve suggestions, positive affirmations, and hypnotherapy techniques to help you give up smoking as they put you into an altered state where you are much more susceptible to suggestions. The positive thoughts are burnt into the smoker’s mind during the session that the smoker has with the hypnotherapist. A sense of disconnection from your present surroundings is a hypnotic trance, if you feel that you are awake and alert. People are said to be in a sense of increased attentiveness, and things can take root more easily – such as the suggestions to stop smoking.

A smoker who visits a hypnotherapist is advised to look into the future – into a situation where there is no cigarette is his hand. The smoker is encouraged to think positively and is made to believe that he can give up smoking. He is repeatedly told of the benefits that result when the cigarette is stubbed out, until the smoker’s mind becomes conditioned to the idea of not smoking. Once this happens, the smoker’s subconscious mind spurns the idea of smoking whenever the urge arises. This session may be followed by a few more sessions later on, depending on the progress achieved by the smoker. The smoker is also given a CD that carries stop smoking messages. The entire idea is to reinforce the value of giving up smoking.

The hypnotherapist argues that withdrawal symptoms are caused mainly by conditioned responses. The smoker does not make an honest attempt to give up smoking because he consciously believes that it is very difficult to give up smoking. That is why there is no guilt involved when a smoker fails in his attempt. His mind tells him that it was a difficult proposition, and pats him for at least trying. The hypnotherapist tries to break this mindset by generating new conditioned responses that are positive, and gives the smoker the confidence to give up smoking. A conditioned response may be as simple as pressing the finger with the thumb and holding them together for about half a minute. The smokers are also told to take three deep breaths and drink a glass of water whenever there is an urge to smoke. Invariably, they dilute the smoker’s urge to light a new cigarette.

The history of hypnosis stretches back far into the mists of time. Little snippets of information occasionally come to light from those far off days, but they have little to do with hypnosis as we know it today.

From our last article, we saw that it was a Dr. James Braid who first coined the word in 1841. We do have reports of people entering into trance-like states going way back into the 6th. century B.C.E., and it’s known that the Hindus of ancient India, together with the Egyptians and the Greeks, often took their sick to ’sleep temples,’ where they would be cured, (hopefully), by what we would term hypnotic suggestion.

In 1027, a Persian psychologist and physician named Avicenna, or Ibn Sina, wrote and published the “Book of Healing,” in which he referred to hypnosis in Arabic as ‘al-Wahm al-Amil.’ He suggested among other things that you could place suggestions in the mind of another person so that he or she would accept the fact of hypnosis.

A 450 year jump brings us to quite a character. Paracelsus. He fought with the church over the disease St. Vitus dance, which affects children and is associated with jerky, uncontrollable movements either of the face, arms or legs. His answer to this was to immerse the patient in cold water, which seemed to quieten these involuntary episodes. Most people, with the urgings of the church, were convinced that this disease was brought upon their children by demons, but Paracelsus strongly persuaded them otherwise.

He would pass magnets, or lodestones, over the bodies of patients, and many claimed considerable relief by this treatment. He was also the first to introduce the word ‘unconscious’ into the language. He lived from 1493-1541, but there’s no arguing the stir he caused during his short life.

He developed laudanum, a tonic based on opium, and had the doubtful privilege of having a word named after him which we still use today. This is because of his magisterial name. Theophrastus Phillippus Aureolus Bombastus von Hohenheim. He did have the misfortune of being a very arrogant individual, hence ‘bombast’ passed into the English language.

Following him, nearly 200 years later, came a gentleman named Valentine Greatrakes, 1628-1666. He was known as the ‘Great Irish Stroker,’ for his apparent ability to heal people by passing his hands over their bodies while holding magnets. A soldier in Cromwell’s army, in 1662 he claimed he could cure the king’s evil, which was scrofula.

Basically, he was a faith healer. Scrofula affects the lymph nodes of the neck and is a form of TB. His ministrations to the king failed.

I apologise that so far little has been mentioned of hypnosis. However, a Viennese Jesuit, who laboured under the unfortunate name of Father Maximilian Hell, used magnets to cure various ills by placing steel plates on the naked bodies of patients.

One such was a young medical doctor from Vienna named Franz Anton Mesmer. He was most interested in this approach, and began developing a theory which he named ‘animal magnetism.’ As I’ve pointed out previously, this was still looked upon as witchcraft.

Mesmer’s theory was that a type of psychic ether flowed through all space and that the movement of astral bodies caused tides in this ether.

Every hypnosis word we use has meaning. It’s well known that when we describe something to a person in hypnosis, that description can become a deep suggestion: “Your hand is becoming very light, floating in the air like a balloon.” Other suggestions are powerful, “You feel very peaceful.” or “Your body is healing perfectly.” But this kind of well-known verbal skill is just the tip of the iceberg with hypnosis. Let’s dive even deeper. Let’s take a look at authoritarian vs. permissive language; at the use of negativities, and at the use of only visual language.

The “I want you to…” Conundrum

It never ceases to amaze me how many practitioners use the words, “I want you to…” when asking their clients to take the next action. It’s truly an instinctive use of language, and yet it is very significant. It, in fact, tells the client, “I’m not really interested in what you want, but here’s what I want you to do. And I’m your boss, so here’s what I want from you.” The significance of this is that the practitioner and client have a relationship that says, “I know what’s good for you, and therefore, I have one up on you.” But there’s another truth that this point of view misses; it’s that our clients have real wisdom, that they often know what is good for them, and that they are worthy of great respect. Milton Erickson knew this deeply. He rescued the old authoritarian hypnosis from its own language – and from itself. So grew the popularity of such phrases as: “Just let yourself…” or “You may find that you want to…” or “If you would, just go ahead and…” Some clients and hypnotherapists rejoiced at this. Others paid little or no attention and kept on with “I want you to…” language. The upshot of this is that sometimes clients are treated with a paternalistic attitude that implies that the hypnotherapist is a demigod. So, if that is what floats your boat, there are then all kinds of practitioners with many variations of behavior. If you are one who uses authoritarian language and would like to see what a new way might be like, I’d like to suggest just becoming aware and trying on a new hat and a new way of using language – if you like.

Negative Language and Negative States

I was taken by surprise one day when I heard a very skilled and wonderful hypnotherapist use this suggestion: “When you feel your anxiety, just breathe deeply.” That sounds innocuous, but think about it. If we use a word like “anxiety” in our positive suggestions, it may make a client anxious. Not only that, it also implies that the client will keep on feeling the fearful state. So it might have worked better if this hypnotherapist would say, “Whenever you want to or need to, you can always breathe deeply.” This doesn’t bring up the negative states, and it offers a possible action just in case the client needs to do something for healing. And yet, I’ve heard many hypnotherapists who give such suggestions as, “You don’t feel so tired anymore.” Or “Your tumors are not so painful.” Well, in addition to using the word “not” – there’s also the very negative words and concomitant images that are evoked.

It’s a well-known fact that negative language can create negative states. My dear friend Dianne Kathryn Short, a marvelous hypnotherapist, created a list of commonly used phrases that can create unwanted manifestations:

· “That eats my heart out.”

“I need a break.”

· “That’s driving me crazy.”

· “That’s to die for.”

· “It makes me sick.”

So when you listen to what your clients are saying, you may find negative words or phrases that may be contributing to their current issues. Hopefully the words you, yourself, use will contribute to the process of healing instead.

You May Not be Able to See It

It’s also good to remember that not all people are visual. Many hypnotherapists and others who do visualization assume that everyone has the ability to see things inside their minds. But as NLP so aptly taught us, only some people are visual. Others are auditory or kinesthetic or olfactory or whatever other sense is their dominant mode of experiencing.

This may sound rather basic, and yet how often do you hear an induction that starts out saying, “Just picture yourself on the beach on a beautiful day.” Not everyone can see that kind of picture. And not only that, some people don’t like the beach, so you’ve got two strikes against you if you go that route. One way to circumvent all of this is to use non-visual inductions – like counting or letters of the alphabet or progressive relaxation. Or you can ask the client to tell you their preferences before you even go into trance. Or you can use visual pictures with non-visual language: “Just imagine yourself on a beach. You may see it or feel it or just know it’s there – any way that is best for you to experience it.”

The great Walter Sichort, master of the ultra-depth trance, once told me that he never used visual inductions because they made people think too much. He said that it was good to take people to more primitive parts of their brains, and so he used numbers and letters and, of course, his voice. It’s good to be sensitive to different peoples’ varying modes of experiencing life and to choose appropriate language.

I was thinking of trying one myself for a phobia I have. Would like to know any positive/negative experiences people may have had. Thank you!

I went to 2 Hypnotherapist. The first one for quite a few yrs I found the talking sessions were more useful than the Hypnotherapy. The Hypnotherapy was nice a relaxing but I don’t think it really helped. When I went there I was hoping she could make hypnotize me to forget my what had happened to me and the fear. I would try CBT Cognitive behavioral therapy or EFT Emotional Freedom Technique. EFT is kinda weird its tapping on the meridian points on ur body why tuned into ur phobia. Both r very good. It explains it a lot better at these websites.

If you are interested in how to learn hypnotism so that you can use it with maximum effect, there are some things you need to master before you can actually hypnotize someone correctly and successfully. While learning the techniques to hypnotize people, you need to become aware of your of your own capabilities and limitations and work on improving yourself. Among the first steps is to properly learn some of the basic phrases that hypnotists commonly use to put others in a trance. Do not use any kind of medication to induce the hypnotic state, this is a very wrong practice and can have seriously unpleasant side effects for the subject. More importantly medication does not induce a hypnotic state in a person.

Also, while on your journey of how to learn hypnotism, an important point to focus on is the atmosphere that you and your subject are in when you try to conduct the session. You need the right kind of atmosphere that will make the subject feel comfortable and relaxed. If you have the wrong kind of atmosphere then your subject will not feel properly at ease. If that happens, then you have failed even before you got started. The room you use should have comfortable seating and a pleasant and soothing decor. It does not mean that you have to redecorate on a grand scale, simply to ensure that the room is a pleasant one; you can achieve this by a few simple decorating ideas.
